Many guests have commented on the beautiful mural that can be seen as they enter our dining room. Local artist Conrad Kaufman painted the mural using photographs we took during a hiking tour of Tuscany. The painting is a representation of San Gimignano, a walled medieval hill town in the province of Siena.
San Gimignano was founded as a small village in the 3rd century BC by the Etruscans. In the Middle Ages and Renaissance era, it was a stopping point for Catholic pilgrims on their way to Rome. The city flourished until 1348, when the Black Death that affected all of Europe, caused most of the city to be deserted. Not until the 19th Century did San Gimignano begin to flourish again. It was during this period it became a haven for artists and an enjoyable destination for tourists.
This region is home to the grape Vernaccia. The wine produced here Vernaccia di San Gimignano is a very simple and delectable white wine that was the first Italian wine to be awarded Denominazione di Origine Controllata (DOC) status in 1966; on July 9th, 1993 it was upgraded to Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita (DOCG).
Vernaccia is delicate and easy to drink before a meal and goes especially well with our Calamari or Artichoke Mousse. This wine is the perfect selection for sipping on our patio or on a picnic.
We are offering an outstanding Le Rote di San Gimignano for $28.00 per bottle. This month we will also be pouring this wine for $7.00 per glass and $14.00 per bottle to-go.
